A design inspired by the south Indian ritual of Koudi quilting during Diwali holiday: Making new from the old. Instead of throwing clothes away, women in Karnataka make quilts for their families that depict personal stories, emotions and traditions. Passed from generation to generation, the person whose patches were used for the piece will always be alive in the thoughts of the family. This dress of different soft cottons was stitched skillfully, mindfully and with absolute love by the ladies of New Delhi’s womens’ collective MasterG.
We were only able to make this one piece before COVID reduced capacity for such a complicated project. She’s truly unique in every way, crafted from a mix of west Indian blockprints and post-consumer upcycled shirting material gathered from friends.
